The cooperative takes its name from the River Mukuyuni, with "Mukuyuni" translating to "next to the giant fig tree" in the local Kamba language, referencing a historical gathering place. This region, in the southeastern part of Kenya, provides ideal conditions for coffee cultivation, with fertile soil and a favourable climate contributing to the exception quality of its beans. Mukuyuni coffee is known for its bright acidity, complex flavour and well-balanced profile. The beans often exhibit vibrant citrus and berry notes, complemented by a smooth, lingering finish. Farmers in the cooperative prioritise organic farming, Fairtrade certification, and continuous improvements to their processes. They maintain clean processing facilities, use digital scales for precision, and invest in advanced pulping equipment to ensure consistency and high quality. Additionally, their commitment to sustainable agriculture includes crop diversification, incorporating figs, flowers, honey, cattle feed and poultry farming to support their livelihoods.

--- Additional Info ~~~ A key advocate for smallholder coffee farmers in Kenya is Vava Angwenyi, founder of Vava Coffee Ltd., a vertically integrated export and social benefit company based in Nairobi. Vava, a coffee producer and exporter, has dedicated her career to empowering farmers and improving Kenya's coffee industry. She left Kenya to pursue an education in economics and mathematics, an opportunity she attributes to her parents' priotisation of education. During her studies, she discovered a passion for coffee and sought ways to invest in better data for the industry. Although she initially struggled to gain traction, she used her research background to spread awareness that knowledge is power, helping farmers and roasters access valuable information for long-term success.

Vava's work extends beyond coffee production and export. She founded Gente del Futuro, a hybrid social impact social impact enterprise, in collaboration with coffee professionals and producers in Colombia. Through this initiative, she builds transnational partnerships that help dismantle systems benefiting from economic struggles in isolation. She believes in creating opportunities within communities by reinvesting in the people and infrastructure that sustain the coffee industry. One of her recent ventures, La Dulce Toro Lamu, is Kenya's first specialty coffee space and Coffee Educational Facility, located on Lamu Island. This project not only promotes Kenyan coffee but also educates young people about careers in the retail coffee sector, further encouraging domestic coffee consumption.

Vava's advocacy and business efforts highlight the potential of Kenya's coffee industry when farmers, exporters, and communities work together. Mukuyuni Farmers Cooperative Society embodies this vision, demonstrating that dedication to quality, sustainability, and farmer empowerment can result in coffee that is both exceptional in taste and impactful in its production. ===

Suggested Recipe ~~~ In: 22g Out: 44g Time: 30sec Temp: 94.5°C

===

Downloadable Files

~~~
Mukuyuni Washed Coffee Card (A6)
Mukuyuni origin photo 1
Mukuyuni origin photo 2
===
~~~
