Gitwe truly highlights the capabilities of Long Miles and what they can do. Stretching between the Heza washing station and the main drag of Kayanza, Gitwe is made up of 637 farmers and almost 40,000 trees. Whole cherries are floated in water pumped from a nearby natural spring at Heza, then sorted so only the ripest cherries are processed. After pulping, the parchment spends 12 hours dry fermenting and a further 24 hours wet fermenting. If the parchment still has pulp after these ferments, it can often be “footed” (think grape-stomping), then a final soak and rinse before slow drying. With their new Coffee Scout program, Long Miles invest into the community, allowing Burundians to become the teachers and trainers amongst coffee farmers. A team of around twenty five young, local adults help work with the Long Miles agriculturalists, helping to increase quality and sustainability. Coffee Scouts implement ways to understand pests and soil to stop the ever elusive potato defect, whilst also helping farmers understand the impacts of climate change and how to combat them. All of this lends to this awesome coffee, with fruit salad flavours of kiwi and passion fruit on top of creamy-sweet pavlova, rounding off with nashi pear crispness. This coffee was produced by Long Miles Coffee and imported by Osito. Make sure to give it a try in espresso or filter.

DEEP DIVE +

PRODUCER : HEZA WASHING STATION

CROP YEAR :

COUNTRY : BURUNDI

REGION : KAYANZA

ELEVATION : 1900-2100 MASL

VARIETAL : Bourbon

PROCESSING : WASHED

IMPORTER/PARTNER : Long Miles

GEO TAG DOWNLOAD PDF

ESPRESSO RECIPE +

ESPRESSO MACHINE
This is just a starting place.
